A Spectacle of herself

Laura Murphy

As part of the NO LIMITS – Disability & Performing Arts Festival 2024

The English performer Laura Murphy dares to perform a wild balancing act between new circus, queer-feminist stand-up comedy, trash and poetic intimacy. At the same time, her solo is a deeply personal exploration of the question of what it means not to fit in, not to want to fit in and yet still demand social space. In “A Spectacle of herself”, she shows herself to be vulnerable and mischievously addresses how characteristics that make her stand out in everyday life can be celebrated and played out in the circus.

Criticism and her love of the circus flow seamlessly into one another and become a provocative and clever show. With a twinkle in her eye, she tackles major themes such as mental health and personal identity and, en passant, reinvents the figure of the clown in the circus.
