The dance theatre piece »Gargoyles« is based on critical feminist research into the relationship between villainy and gender using the motif of the »evil woman«. The stage project isolates several villainesses from their literary contexts and imagines them as Gothic gargoyles. These physical »incarnations of evil« borrowed from Gothic architecture serve as templates for the project: In the linking of dramatic figures and architectural elements, evil becomes recognisable as an overarching narrative that, like misogyny, seems to be deeply rooted in the foundations of our society.
Hanging at the edge of the stage, the grotesquely abstracted villains Medea and Lady Macbeth awaken from their actual and metaphorical fossilisation together with their performers. Half stone, half human form, the performers explore the theatrical and real tradition of the evil woman.
Anne Welenc celebrated her debut as an author and director with »QUEENS« in 2023. Her works are based on critical feminist research into classic theatre material, which she expands with impulses from related performing arts and elements of pop and club culture.
