Ex Silens. A communal ritual of sensory reconfiguration

Marco Donnarumma

70 minutes
Theater hall

English announcement text coming soon.

Language Info

Language no problem.
The show on Fri 13.11. will feature Audio Description in German.

Access / Content Note

Accessible for wheelchair users.
Various seating options available.

Partly Relaxed Performance: During the performance it is very dark in the space. We will provide glow sticks, so you can signal to the Access Friends anytime if you'd like to be accompanied outside. The performance involves interactions with the audience. At the Access Table you can get a reflecting sticker, which signals to the artist that you don't like to be interacted with.

This performance is conceived as a comprehensive experience for Deaf, non-hearing, hard of hearing, and hearing audiences. There will be no spoken language; communication and interaction between performer and audience takes place through touch and body language. There are vibrating straps for haptic communication (this is optional and straps are not available for the whole audience).
Audience seating is directly on the performance space, close to the performer, who might interact with some audience members (optional).

Content Notes: Quick lighting changes (Strobe light, quick changes in lighting, very bright or very dark stage lighting); Loud noise (Loud noises, durational noise, high frequency audio, bass-heavy music – however not all of this simultaneously).

Further Information

Marco Donnarumma is an artist, stage director, inventor and theorist. His oeuvre confronts normative body politics with uncompromising counter-narratives, where bodies are in tension between control and agency, presence and absence, grace and monstrosity. He is best known for creating body-machines that use sound, AI, biosensors, and robotics to turn the body into a site of resistance and transformation. He has presented his work in thirty-eight countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas and is the recipient of numerous accolades, most notably the the Prix Ars Electronica's Award of Distinction in Sound Art 2017, the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education's Artist of the Science Year 2018, and a Hyundai ZER01NE Creator grant in 2024. Donnarumma was named a pioneer of performing arts with advanced technologies by the national newspaper Der Standard, Austria. His writings are published in Frontiers in Computer Science, Computer Music Journal and Performance Research, among others.
