Festival
Sportfest
Training, rehearsal, game, show, performance – the central vocabulary of sport and theater are amazingly similar. As if we always mean theater when we talk about sport – and vice versa.
Based on this proximity, the sports festival transforms the theater into a sports venue. For three weeks, people train, play, fight and perform at Ballhaus Ost: In training sessions, tournaments and competitions as well as in performances, shows, installations and talks.
The invited artistic, practical sports, and discursive works operate in the field of tension and play between the body and society. They question the inclusions and exclusions that are cultivated through sport and uncover new stories and layers to expand perspectives and views on sport and artistic practice.

Access
Dear visitors,
We are Wanda Dubrau and Miles Wendt. Together, we developed the access concept for the Sports Festival. We are aware that the format of the festival — a sports fest — also creates many exclusions.
Ableism remains a current issue in sports. With our offerings, we aim to make the festival program more accessible. Since many different events will take place on the weekends and Ballhaus Ost will be very busy, we are focusing on providing quiet spaces and ensuring that Access Friends accompany the events.
Access Friends support you during your visit. They can, for example, answer questions about accessibility or show you the way to your event.
We will not provide Access Friends during the weekday training sessions.
If you have questions about the training sessions, email us at: access@ballhausost.de
We want to provide you with information here about the accessibility and barrier-free offerings at the Sports Festival.
Spatial Overview during the Weekend Program:
Courtyard: There will be a bar, a small hut with a betting booth, and seating. Tickets can also be purchased here. The Access Point is located in the courtyard.
Foyer: There is a seating area and a display case with an exhibition. During the week, the foyer also serves as a changing area.
Sports Hall / Main Hall: This is where various events take place — performances, competitions, parties, discourse events, and training sessions. The space can be adapted for different events with mobile stands, walls, and various seating options. The windows are covered with colorful film.
Sports Bar / Bar: This is the venue for discourse events and the darts tournament.
Quiet Tent: Located outside to the left of the sports hall.
Measures to Reduce Barriers Throughout the Festival (Training + Weekends):
A wheelchair-accessible toilet is available.
Spatial accessibility information can be found here:
https://www.ballhausost.de/barrierefreiheit/
Tickets can be purchased online via Reservix. Reservations can be made by phone: 030 440 39 168 (voicemail) or by email: karten@ballhausost.de
Earplugs and masks are available at the Access Point (in the foyer during training sessions).
Water is available either at the Access Point or in the sports hall. All rooms are labeled with signs. Questions about accessibility can be directed to: access@ballhausost.de
Measures to Reduce Barriers on Program Days Friday to Sunday (and Thursday, June 19):
There is an Access Point in the courtyard. Access Friends are present there. You can get information about the events at the Access Point.
A Quiet Tent is available. You can rest and take a break there.
It includes stim toys, a weighted blanket, and various seating options.
The tent is located outside to the left of the sports hall.
For performances, discourse events, and the accompanying program, content notes will be prepared.
Information about the schedule and sensory features will also be provided.
Two Access Friends will be on-site. They wear colorful vests with a big “A”
For all performances and discourse events, as well as the opening “Fight Night,” various seating options will be available.
If possible, please reserve a beanbag in advance by writing to access@ballhausost.de, or speak to an Access Friend on-site.
A pickup service from a nearby transit stop can be arranged if needed.
(Eberswalder Straße U2/M10/M1 or Schönhauser Allee U2, S41, S42, S8, S85)
The U2 Eberswalder Straße station and the S-Bahn/U-Bahn station Schönhauser Allee both have elevators.
Detailed directions are available here:
https://www.ballhausost.de/barrierefreiheit/
Under each event listing, you’ll find details about sensory stimuli, content notes, and audience setup.
Since many productions are still in rehearsal, sensory stimuli and content notes will be added continuously.
