Ambient 2: War of the Worlds

Daniel Schrader

October 2020: The last Earth-Mars opposition so far. A large light is registered on the red planet, first by the Californian Lick Observatory and soon after by other astronomers.
September 2022: A group of about 30 people stalks through the Berlin Volkspark Rehberge and practices speculative perception between a dancing arena, a duck pond and a wrestler sculpture.

In his Ambient Theater series, Daniel Schrader develops relaxed forms of spoken theater, most recently in »Ambient 1: Theatre for Airports (Hyperion)«. »Ambient 2« adapts H.G. Wells’ alien invasion story »The War of the Worlds« as a radio theater play in the Rehberge garden monument. With headphones on their ears and their eyes on the landscape, the participants set off on a tour across the park area. In the interplay between sci-fi radio play, real park life and live interventions by the performers, sound and image, relaxation and distraction, reality and fiction intermingle.
